Matt/Satin vs Gloss Timber floor finish

The Modern Natural Look

For professional Floor Sanding Brisbane, we use Matt/Satin because it provides the modern, natural timber appearance most homeowners want. UV Rush is imported in Matt/Satin as our standard finish. Alternative sheens offer little practical benefit, require special ordering in minimum 10-litre quantities and create additional product waste and cost.

The meaningful choice is not normally between matte, satin and gloss. It is between the natural appearance of a modern Matt/Satin coating and the old mirror-shine appearance of traditional full-gloss solvent-based polyurethane.

Matt/Satin allows the colour and grain of the timber to remain the feature without turning the floor into a highly reflective surface. It also disguises dust, footprints and fine surface marks better than full gloss, making it suitable for real homes where floors are walked on and lived on every day.

What Does Matt/Satin Look Like?

Matt/Satin has a smooth, natural appearance with a soft level of reflection. It is not completely flat or lifeless, but it does not create the mirror-like glare associated with traditional full-gloss polyurethane.

The result is a timber floor that looks natural and modern while still showing the colour, character and grain of the boards. Matt/Satin works well in Queenslanders, modern homes, apartments, open-plan living areas and commercial spaces because it does not overpower the timber or dominate the room.

For most customers, Matt/Satin provides the balance they are looking for: enough sheen to bring out the timber without creating excessive glare.

Why Does Floor Pty Ltd Offer Matt/Satin as Standard?

Matt/Satin is the appearance most customers want, which is why Floor Pty Ltd supplies it as the standard finish.

UV Rush is imported into Australia in Matt/Satin. Other sheen levels are not routinely carried because the visible difference is generally too small to justify the additional cost and product waste involved.

UV Rush is supplied in minimum 10-litre quantities. Special-ordering another sheen for an individual project can leave a substantial amount of unused opened coating. That wasted product still has to be paid for, increasing the project cost without providing a meaningful improvement in appearance or performance.

A customer can request a special-order sheen, but they must be prepared to cover the additional material and wastage costs. In practice, customers have not considered the small visual difference worthwhile.

What Is the Difference Between Matt/Satin and Half Matt?

The terminology can be confusing because European coating manufacturers use different names from those commonly used in Australia.

“Matt” is a German term that can describe a finish closer to what Australians may call semi-gloss. Half Matt is a lower-reflection variation, but the difference between Half Matt and Matt/Satin is not dramatic enough for most customers to justify special ordering another minimum quantity of coating.

Once the floor is installed in a real home with natural light, furniture and normal use, the difference is generally far less important than customers expect. The timber species, board colour, grain, lighting and coating system have a much greater effect on the finished appearance.

For this reason, Floor Pty Ltd standardises on Matt/Satin rather than carrying multiple opened containers of coatings that look very similar.

Why Does Floor Pty Ltd Not Offer Traditional Full Gloss?

Traditional full-gloss solvent-based polyurethane creates a highly reflective, mirror-like surface. This was a common look for Floor Polishing Brisbane decades ago, but it is no longer what most homeowners request.

Full gloss reflects windows, downlights and surrounding objects across the floor. It also highlights dust, footprints, fine scratches, sanding imperfections and natural variations between the boards.

Traditional solvent-based full-gloss coatings can also yellow severely as they age. On pale timbers and pine floors, this yellowing can change the timber to a strong tan or orange colour rather than preserving its natural appearance.

Floor Pty Ltd does not offer the old-style chemical mirror-shine finish. Matt/Satin provides the cleaner, more natural appearance preferred in modern homes without the glare and severe colour change associated with traditional full gloss.

Does Matt/Satin Hide Scratches Better Than Full Gloss?

Matt/Satin does not prevent scratches, but it generally makes fine scratching less noticeable than full gloss.

Scratches become visible when light reflects differently from the disturbed area of the coating. A highly reflective full-gloss floor shows every change in the surface, including fine scratches, dust, smears and footprints. Matt/Satin spreads the reflected light more softly, helping ordinary surface marks blend into the overall appearance.

This is especially useful in homes with children, pets, regular visitors and heavily used living areas. It is also valuable in commercial spaces where chairs, tables and constant foot traffic can quickly make a highly reflective floor look marked.

The coating system still determines how easily the floor scratches. The Matt/Satin sheen helps disguise fine marks, while a harder coating system provides the actual resistance to scratching and wear.

Does Sheen Determine Durability?

No. The sheen describes how the floor reflects light. It does not determine how hard-wearing the coating is.

Durability comes from the coating system. A high-performance UV-cured polyurethane is harder and more scratch-resistant than traditional water-based polyurethane because of the coating system itself, not because it has a Matt/Satin appearance.

This distinction is important. Matt/Satin helps the floor look better by reducing glare and disguising fine marks, but it is the strength of the coating that determines how well the floor withstands traffic, furniture, pets and everyday wear.

Customers should therefore choose the coating system according to the performance and downtime they need. Floor Pty Ltd supplies the finished appearance in Matt/Satin because that is the natural modern look most customers prefer.

Does Matt/Satin Make Timber Look Dull?

No. Matt/Satin does not remove the colour or character of the timber. It reduces harsh surface reflection so the timber itself remains the focus.

Full gloss can make colour and grain appear stronger because it creates greater contrast and reflects more light. However, it can also introduce glare, highlight every imperfection and produce a more artificial appearance.

Matt/Satin gives the floor a softer and more even appearance while still bringing out the natural colour and grain. It is particularly effective on large open-plan floors, where full gloss can create excessive reflection from windows and downlights.

Is Matt/Satin Easier to Keep Looking Clean?

All polyurethane floors require the same sensible cleaning routine, but Matt/Satin generally looks clean for longer than full gloss.

Full gloss quickly shows dust, footprints, smears and marks left by cleaning equipment. Matt/Satin disguises these more effectively because it reflects less direct light from the surface.

This does not mean the floor needs less cleaning. It means normal dust and footprints are less visually obvious between cleans. The correct cleaning products and methods remain important regardless of the sheen. See How to Clean Polished Timber Floors Without Damaging the Finish for the recommended routine.

Is Matt/Satin Suitable for Homes With Pets?

Yes. Matt/Satin is a practical finish for homes with dogs and other pets because claw marks, hair, dust and footprints are less noticeable than they would be on full gloss.

The sheen does not make the coating harder, so it should still be combined with a coating system suited to the expected level of use. A high-performance coating provides the scratch and wear resistance, while Matt/Satin helps keep ordinary surface marks from dominating the appearance of the floor.

Pet accidents should always be cleaned immediately. Urine left sitting on any floor coating may eventually penetrate damaged areas and stain the timber black.

Can a Different Sheen Be Special Ordered?

Yes, but it is not normally worthwhile.

UV Rush is imported in Matt/Satin as the standard finish and is supplied in minimum 10-litre quantities. Ordering another sheen specifically for one project creates additional coating and freight costs, and any unused opened product may be wasted.

The customer would need to pay the additional cost created by that special order. Given how little visible difference there can be between Matt/Satin and nearby sheen levels such as Half Matt, customers have not considered the change valuable enough to justify the expense.

Floor Pty Ltd therefore recommends Matt/Satin as the practical standard rather than creating unnecessary cost and wastage for an almost indistinguishable change.

Can an Existing Full-Gloss Floor Be Changed to Matt/Satin?

Yes, provided the existing coating is sound and the damage has not reached the timber.

If the coating is intact, the floor may be buffed and recoated in Matt/Satin to change its appearance without sanding the entire floor back to bare timber. The existing coating must first be assessed to confirm that it is suitable for recoating.

Deep scratches, black staining, water damage or ghosting cannot be removed by changing the sheen. Those problems sit underneath or within the existing coating and may require full sanding before a new coating system is applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Matt/Satin the Same as a Completely Matte Finish?

Matt/Satin has a natural, low-reflection appearance, but it is not completely flat. It retains a soft sheen that brings out the colour and grain without producing the mirror-like reflection of traditional full gloss.

Does Matt/Satin Look Like an Oiled Floor?

Matt/Satin polyurethane can provide a natural appearance similar to the low-reflection look people associate with an oiled floor. However, it seals the timber beneath a polyurethane coating system rather than requiring the periodic re-oiling associated with traditional oil finishes.

Is Matt/Satin Less Durable Than Gloss?

No. Sheen level does not determine durability. Matt/Satin and gloss versions of the same coating system have comparable wear performance. The strength, scratch resistance and expected lifespan come from the coating system, not the amount of reflected light.

Why Not Give Customers a Choice of Every Sheen?

UV Rush is imported in Matt/Satin because it is the appearance most customers want. Other sheen levels require special ordering in minimum 10-litre quantities, creating additional cost and possible product wastage.

The visible difference between Matt/Satin and nearby sheen levels is generally too small to justify that expense. Floor Pty Ltd prefers to supply the finish customers consistently choose rather than charging them more for an almost indistinguishable variation.

Does Matt/Satin Change the Colour of the Timber?

Matt/Satin brings out the timber’s natural colour and grain without the severe yellowing associated with old solvent-based full-gloss polyurethane. The final colour still depends on the timber species, its age, previous treatments and the coating system applied.

Why Do Old Gloss Floors Often Look Orange?

Traditional solvent-based polyurethane can yellow significantly as it ages. On pale pine and other lighter timbers, this yellowing may produce a strong tan or orange appearance. Modern Matt/Satin coating systems provide a more natural appearance without the mirror-like shine of those older finishes.
