Comparing Scratch Resistance of Finishes

Most floor finishes don’t fail because they wear out over decades. They fail much earlier, through everyday use.

Scratches, scuffs, and surface marking are what people notice first. It’s what makes a floor look tired even when the timber underneath is still in good condition.

That makes scratch resistance one of the most important factors when choosing a finish. Not just how it looks on day one, but how it holds up once people start living on it.

Different finishes behave very differently in this regard.

Traditional oil-based and hardwax oil finishes sit at the softer end of the scale. They can give a natural look and are easy to touch up, but that softness means they mark easily. Fine scratches, heel marks, and everyday wear show up quickly, especially in high-traffic areas. These finishes are designed to be maintained rather than resist damage.

Standard water-based polyurethane is harder and more durable. It provides a better level of protection against scratching and general wear, which is why it has become a common choice for residential floors. However, even with water-based polyurethane, the final hardness develops over time as the coating continues to cure after application. During that early period, the floor is still more vulnerable than most people realise.

This is where UV-cured polyurethane separates itself.

A true UV-cured polyurethane system does not rely on time to reach its final hardness. The coating is fully hardened on site using ultraviolet light, creating a dense, crosslinked surface that is significantly more resistant to scratching and scuffing from the moment the job is finished.

The result is not just faster curing. It is a harder, more consistent surface that performs better under real use.

This is an important distinction, because “UV-cured” is now used loosely in the market. Some systems use UV light to assist the drying of oils or wax-based coatings. These finishes are still fundamentally soft, even if they cure more quickly. They do not develop the same level of hardness or long-term wear resistance as a polyurethane system that has been fully cured under UV light.

In practical terms, that difference shows up very quickly.

Water-based polyurethane improves on this, but still has a period where the coating is gaining strength.

UV-cured polyurethane starts where other systems eventually get to, or in many cases exceed them entirely. The surface is already at full functional hardness when the floor is handed over, which reduces early damage and maintains a cleaner appearance for much longer.

That doesn’t mean every project needs the hardest possible finish. In lower traffic areas, or where a softer, repairable surface is preferred, oil-based systems can still be appropriate. But where durability matters, scratch resistance becomes the deciding factor, and the coating system needs to be chosen accordingly.
