Pet Damage to Timber Floors: There Are Two Completely Different Types of Scratches
Most people assume all pet scratches are the same. They’re not.
Type 1: Coating Damage
This is the most common type.
The dog has scratched the coating, but not the timber underneath.
Typical signs:
Fine white scratches
Scuff marks
Surface marring
Dull traffic areas
The timber itself is undamaged
In many cases, the coating has taken the damage exactly as it was designed to do.
The Cure
A buff and recoat.
During the buffing process, the existing surface is abraded with fine abrasives to create a physical key for the new coating.
This process:
Removes surface scuffs
Eliminates shallow coating scratches
Creates mechanical adhesion
Allows a fresh coat to flow into the existing scratches
Once the new coat is applied, those scratches are often no longer visible because the coating fills and levels them.
The Prevention
The biggest factor is the coating system selected.
A tougher coating will generally provide greater resistance to future scratching and wear.
This is where coating choice becomes important.
Not all coatings are equally durable.
A commercial-grade UV-cured coating such as UV Rush is significantly more resistant to scratching and abrasion than many conventional water-based polyurethane systems.
Type 2: Timber Damage
This is completely different.
The coating may still be intact.
The problem is the timber underneath has been damaged.
Typical signs:
Dents
Bruises
Indentations
Compressed timber fibres
Visible depressions
You can often run your hand across the floor and physically feel the indentation.
The timber has yielded under pressure.
This is particularly common on softer species such as pine.
How to Tell Which Type of Scratch You Have
It doesn’t matter whether the scratch was caused by a pet, moving furniture, a tradesman, a delivery driver or children. The diagnosis is the same.
There are only two possibilities:
The damage is confined to the coating.
The damage has penetrated through the coating and into the timber.
In reality, many scratches contain a combination of both.
A simple test is to wipe the scratch with a damp cloth.
If the scratch disappears momentarily, the damage is usually confined to the coating. In most cases, a buff and recoat of the entire continuous area will restore the floor.
If the scratch remains visible, changes colour or becomes more noticeable when wet, the scratch has usually penetrated through the coating and into the timber. Once the timber has been damaged, professional Floor Sanding Brisbane services are required.
The same applies to dents, bruises and indentations. If the timber fibres have been crushed, a recoat will not remove the damage. Full sanding is required.
